A replacement UVC germicidal lamp is a special type of lamp or bulb which produces ultraviolet (UVC) light. This short-wave ultraviolet light disrupts DNA base pairing causing formation of pyrimidine dimers and leads to the inactivation of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. HOW LONG DO UVC BULBS LAST? Typically, a UVC bulb or lamp lasts 12 months or about 9000 hours. The germicidal lamp will stay lit longer than that time but after 1 year or 12 months of use the lamp’s ability to kill bacteria will slowly diminish. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE UV LIGHT TO KILL MOLD? The amount of exposure time required to kill mold varies greatly depending on the type of mold. Some molds are destroyed after a few seconds of exposure, while other molds require 8,000 seconds or more. The air traveling in an air duct is moving at a minimum of 100 feet per minute. It is important to have air moving on regular time intervals so it has maximum exposed the the UVC lamp.
